The long-awaited Notorious B.I.G digital collection “Sky’s The Limit’ dropped and sold out on Tuesday. The hip-hop legend’s estate, The Christopher Wallace Estate, chose the NFT market, Oneof, for the NFT collection of 3000 3D avatars to honor Biggie’s enduring legacy.
The official drop sold out in 10 minutes. You can still purchase the NFTs on the secondary market on the Oneof platform.
The collection of generative art pieces depicts his authentic street style and lyrics. As of writing, the floor price is $114 with 1161 owners and 683 listings.
And OMG, it includes a surprising utility for up-and-coming rap artists!!!
Notorious B.I.G NFT utility
For starters, NFT holders gain access to the Sky’s The Limit Collective. Here, members hold 80% of the voting rights on which rap artists, DJs, and musicians can sample Biggie Smalls music, specifically the iconic “Fulton Street Freestyle”. They collectively license the audio. Wow!!!
However, the big sell for any hip-hop fan or artist is that owning a Notorious B.I.G. NFT gives you the rights to license, sample and download the never-before-available freestyle audio. You can even add “Featuring Notorious B.I.G.” to your recordings.
The freestyle rap from when Biggie was seventeen took place on a Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn street corner.
Wayne Barrow, representing Biggies estate, remarked,
“Biggie’s music is a very important part of hip hop culture and its global impact.”
He continued, “Our business partner, Elliot Osagie of Willingie Inc, came up with the concept of coming together with OneOf to share the infamous freestyle that showcased to the world the icon that Biggie would soon become through an NFT, and sharing it with his fans in this way we are certain would make him proud.”
Why choose Oneof
The Christopher Wallace estate went with the Web3 company, Oneof, for the drop. Other icon musicians on the platform include Whitney Houston. The company is a ‘Green’ NFT platform built on the Tezos blockchain.
Joshua James, the Oneof co-founder, said, “We’re thrilled to work with The Christopher Wallace Estate to honor Biggie’s enduring legacy, in web3 and beyond, and we have some amazing surprises for NFT holders along the way.”
He further elaborated, “We named this NFT collection Sky’s the Limit because we believe this is a watershed moment in NFTs where seminal artists like Biggie and their truest fans can drive culture and drive value together.”
Biggies mother, Voletta Wallace, released a statement on behalf of Biggie’s estate saying: “We are excited about our partnership with OneOf and their expertise to memorialize my son Christopher with this first official NFT drop to give his fans an opportunity to participate in and honor their love of him and his music.”
Biggie’s legacy
Notorious B.I.G., who would have been 50 his year, was one of the most influential rappers of his generation with his famous freestyle. His career was cut short after being gunned down in 1997 in L.A. following a feud with Tupac, who lost his life the year before. The NFT collection represented a way of celebrating Biggie’s life.
Afterthoughts
As a Notorious B.I.G. NFT holder, you are not only getting a digital asset but also the right to use the sample in your songs and possibly revenue from the sales that use it.
