The NBA recently began teasing potential Ethereum NFTs to commemorate this season’s playoffs, and the league also debuted a Discord server
NBA NFTs: Top Shot is the first step
NBA Top Shot has been a success for the NBA and its stakeholders, and in more ways than one, the NBA Top shot collection has helped the NBA and other sports leagues and teams worldwide realize the importance and opportunities available in the Web3 space.
If you’re a fan of the NBA Top Shot collection, you may be happy to learn that the Association is stepping up its NFT and Web3 initiatives, and this time, the NBA NFT endeavors will call the Ethereum blockchain their home.
A few days ago, the NBA launched a Twitter feed for NFT-related content alongside a Discord server to advertise its NFT and Web3 projects.
In the business world, when an entity realizes the importance and success of a strategy, tactic, or product, they almost always double down to make the most of the opportunity. The NBA is no different, they tested the waters with Web3 products, and now the Association is going all-in on NFTs and related products.
In case you missed the NBA DIscord launch, one of the event’s highlights was the announcement that the Association will release Ethereum NFTs to “celebrate” the 2021-22 season playoffs. I don’t know about you, but the prospects of Playoff NFTs excite me.
The NBA: Web3 powerhouse?
As mentioned a few moments ago, the NBA debuted its Discord server during the week, and in the span of a few days, the server has garnered over 30,000 members and counting. As a global brand, it’s not out of the ordinary for this many people to show interest in an NBA NFT project, and the members on the server are bound to increase as the NBA Playoffs get more exciting.
On Twitter, you’ll be able to find the recently launched NBAxNFT Twitter feed, where the Association has shared a few critical info, including “showcasing all things intersecting basketball and Web3, including NFTs, gaming, and the metaverse.”
The NBA has shown that they are not afraid to explore untested waters, and in more ways than one, companies globally with Web3 ambitions look to the NBA for pointers.
The future of NBA NFT projects
NBA partnered with Dapper Labs to create its successful NBA Top Shot product, but the fact that the upcoming NFTs will be on the Ethereum blockchain means that it’s unlikely Dapper Labs will be directly involved in the project.
Dapper Labs built the Flow blockchain platform, and the NBA Top Shot NFTs call Flow their home. The NBA Playoffs NFT collection will be the first of many exciting Web3 products that’ll come after the success of NBA Top Shot—interested in minting Playoffs NFTs? They’ll be free to mint, and all you need to worry about are Ethereum’s gas fees.
