The Sandbox, a decentralized gaming platform, has announced the launch of its decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), known as The Sandbox DAO. This initiative aims to empower SAND token holders and virtual LAND owners—NFTs representing in-game plots—to participate in the platform’s governance.
Phased Implementation of The Sandbox DAO
The implementation of The Sandbox DAO will occur in three phases. In the first phase, already started, SAND token and LAND plot owners can vote on Sandbox Improvement Proposals (SIPs) submitted by the community via email. A council composed of Sandbox leadership and partners from firms like Animoca Brands will review and guide these proposals, which can cover areas such as governance, game content, and charity.
In the second phase, dubbed “Exploration,” The Sandbox will gradually hand over more power to the DAO, reducing its direct control over the community’s interactions. The final phase will see the DAO becoming fully independent and responsible for proposing and voting on ideas. This multi-phase rollout reflects a path of progressive decentralization.
Structure of The Sandbox DAO
The Sandbox DAO will consist of two critical groups: the Council and Advisors. The Council will review SIPs and provide guidance to ensure proposals align with the DAO’s vision and community interests. Additionally, the Advisors will act as cultural ambassadors and strategic advisors, leveraging their expertise to guide the DAO towards achieving its vision of a decentralized, vibrant metaverse.
The Special Council includes notable figures such as Sebastian Borget, Co-Founder and COO of The Sandbox, who brings extensive experience in blockchain and gaming. Frederic Montagnon, Chairman of the Arianee Project, is known for his work on tokenized digital product passports. Furthermore, Jean-Michel Pailhon, Founder of Grail Capital, provides insights into digital art and collectibles.
Yat Siu, Co-Founder and CEO of Animoca Brands, understands the Web3 space and gaming through his leadership at Animoca Brands. Shannon Snow, COO of World of Women, a leading Web3 brand celebrating inclusion in the digital era, brings expertise in the NFT space and its integration into entertainment and media.
Vision for Community Governance
Arthur Madrid, CEO and Co-Founder of The Sandbox, emphasized the importance of community governance in the platform’s vision. “We believe a gaming open metaverse must be governed by all users: creators, players, and LAND owners to make it timeless and push the boundaries of our community. Blockchain technology enables a fully decentralized system of decisions and power to people. We think Fortnite or Roblox will adopt it at one point,” said Madrid.
The introduction of the DAO intends to foster trust and promote a sense of belonging among community members by ensuring transparency in every decision and process. The Sandbox team believes involving the community in governance is crucial for the platform’s longevity and growth.
