Pantone Announces Exploration of Digital Art World with Tezos x Pantone Color of the Year Initiative

  • Pantone, the global color authority, has chosen the energy-efficient and self-upgradable Tezos blockchain to explore the world of color in the digital art world.
  • Tezos, with over 50 million transactions in 2021, had an average carbon footprint of just 17 individuals.

Pantone, the global color authority and provider of professional color language standards and digital solutions for the design community, today introduced a new blue shade, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri, a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone as the Pantone Color of the Year selection for 2022. Pantone will release the Color of the Year 2022 through a digital collection as NFTs on the energy-efficient Tezos blockchain.

Pantone will begin to explore the world of color in the digital art world for Color of the Year 2022. Collaborating with Paris-based multidisciplinary artist, Polygon1993, Pantone will leverage these artworks inspired by PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri to create a digital representation of the color and the message that the color embodies – inventiveness, creativity and new ways of thinking about color. Digital design helps us to stretch the limits of reality, opening the door to a dynamic virtual world where we can explore and create new color possibilities.

Pantone’s exploration of how our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways begins with this new project on the Proof of Stake Tezos blockchain. The Color of the Year 2022 — PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri, is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through. With trends in gaming, the expanding popularity of the metaverse and rising artistic community in the digital space, the Pantone X Tezos initiative illustrates the fusion of modern life and how color trends in the digital world are being manifested in the physical world and vice versa.

“The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope for. Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place. As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication and as a way to express and effect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red-violet-infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lie before us.” – Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute

Pantone chose Tezos to power its Color of the Year program because the network has proven to be fast, secure, and energy-efficient. Tezos is a pioneering Proof of Stake blockchain and is the only blockchain network to successfully upgrade itself to increase efficiencies, adopt new features, and lower energy consumption. Deployments on Tezos are up 15,000% in 2021 and the network has eclipsed 50 million transactions. Recently, Tezos was the exclusive NFT Sponsor of Art Basel Miami Beach 2021, where tens of thousands of art aficionados from around the world opened their first crypto wallet and minted their first NFT at the interactive exhibition: Humans + Machines: NFTs and the Ever-Evolving World of Art. Tezos is the blockchain of choice for open, energy-efficient web3 experiences.
