Ethscriptions: Ordinals’ Echo in the Ethereum Sphere

Tom Lehman, the former CEO of genius.com, has recently introduced a unique protocol to the Ethereum community. Named Ethscriptions, this new platform has sparked interest as it gives users another way to create and share digital assets on the Ethereum blockchain.

The protocol utilizes Ethereum’s “calldata” and is considered a cost-effective and decentralized alternative to contract storage. Ethscriptions directly inscribe non-financial data under 96 kilobytes in size into the Ethereum main chain. This primarily includes images echoing Ordinals on the Bitcoin network.

In a testament to the Ethereum community’s openness to innovation, Ethscriptions have seen swift and broad adoption. Despite the existence of similar technology, the introduction of Ethscriptions represents a new trend within the community, as shown by the 30,000 created in its first 18 hours.

Ethereum Punks: Lehman’s Inaugural Ethscriptions Project

Lehman’s inaugural project on the Ethscriptions protocol, “Ethereum Punks,” was met with an overwhelmingly positive response, with all 10,000 assets being claimed in near-record time. To ensure uniqueness, Ethscriptions enforce rules whereby no previous inscription in a block or within the same transaction block can contain the same content.

The Ethscriptions protocol stipulates that transfers occur when a transaction’s input data matches the hash of a valid Ethscription and the transaction’s sender is identified as the Ethscription’s owner. Furthermore, any file intended for inscription on the Ethereum chain must adhere to the 96-kilobyte threshold.

Lehman explains, “The recipient of the creation transaction is the Ethscription’s initial owner. The sender of the creation transaction is the Ethscription’s creator.” To aid in visibility and interaction, Lehman has set up a dedicated website, ethscriptions.com, allowing visitors to view all Ethscriptions or browse them by address.

Operating Ethscriptions: An Independent Protocol

The Ethscriptions protocol lets you work independently. Even though many in the Ethereum community prefer using an indexer, like Etherscan, for easy use, Ethscriptions gives you the option to manually check and rebuild the indexer data yourself.

According to the website, Ethscriptions are decentralized. Ethscriptions grant autonomy to its users – you don’t need approval from anyone, nor can anyone prevent you from using it.

Although the Ethereum network already has established infrastructure for the creation of NFTs and other digital assets, the future popularity of Ethscriptions remains to be seen.

The Bitcoin Ordinals project dramatically increased from zero to 10 million inscriptions within six months. This was fueled mainly by users exploring the new ability to mint assets, and, later, entirely new tokens, using the BRC-20 token standard on the Bitcoin network. Whether Ethscriptions will experience a similar trajectory is still an open question.

Regardless, Ethscriptions mark a notable development in the Ethereum ecosystem, demonstrating the potential for user-driven innovation and creating unique NFTs within the blockchain sphere.

Final Thoughts

The unique feature of Ethscriptions, enabling the creation of digital assets directly inscribed onto the Ethereum main chain, fosters decentralization and encourages creative freedom. While we can’t predict whether Ethscriptions will emulate the explosive popularity of Bitcoin’s Ordinals, their introduction undeniably enriches the Ethereum landscape, propelling it towards an even more diverse and user-centric future.
