Making Videos in Decentraland: Tips and Tricks

This post was originally published on this site

On January 8th, the Decentraland Video Contest kicked off to a great start! With a little less than a month remaining before submissions are due, it’s time to buckle down and get those reels pixel perfect.

To help speed things along and smooth out your filming experience, we wanted to share a few technical tips and tricks we turn to every day when creating in-world videos.

Lights, camera, action!

Optimize your graphics settings

Before you shoot any new video, it’s strongly recommended that you tweak your graphics settings to obtain the highest resolution and rendering quality possible – given the constraints of your hardware.

Simply click the settings icon in the bottom right corner of the Explorer to pull up your graphics settings, and start bumping each setting up until you see a big decrease in framerate.

Use fullscreen mode

After tweaking your graphics settings, don’t forget to film in fullscreen mode! This can save time spent on cropping out your browser tabs or any other UI elements that might clutter your final video. Just press F11 to enter full screen mode.

Hide the UI

As with only shooting in full screen, hiding Decentraland’s UI (or user interface) is a great way to keep the focus on your subjects and not on the buttons around your screen. Press U to toggle your UI display.

Shoot from different angles using different avatars

This is a fun and creative way to shoot multiple perspectives of the same scene or avatar. Open up a new instance of Decentraland in a second tab using a new guest avatar. Navigate to the same realm and scene as your subject, and use this second avatar’s perspective to shoot footage from a wider range of angles. This is also a great way to get better third-person views of an avatar to show off wearables, emotes, or other actions.

Feel free to experiment with quick shots between several avatars, depending on how much your hardware will allow before impacting your video quality (running several instances of Decentraland at once can be taxing for your computer).

Catch that morning light, or shoot the night scenes

Depending on the style and script of your video, you can switch between day mode and night mode via the settings menu. It’s a quick and easy way to make the mood brighter and more optimistic, or more mysterious.

Switch up your movement

If you’re taking shots while moving, you can switch between walking and running by holding down the Shift key. Different panning shots might appear better at a slow walk, but you can always run to keep up with the action.

Keep it social

Decentraland is a social world, so try to capture scenes with other avatars around you! It’s a great way to get your friends involved, too. Coordinate shots over voice chat by holding T.

Costumes and makeup!

Show off wearables that make your avatar, and your personal take on Decentraland, unique and interesting.

Tools

If you’re still on the hunt for a good screen capture app, OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is a fantastic, free, and open source tool for Windows, MacOS, and Linux. OBS is the tool of choice for many top streamers, and it’s well suited for capturing in-world footage of Decentraland.

Don’t miss the deadline!

Submissions will be accepted up until 00:00 UTC on Tuesday 9th February 2021. Just share your video on Twitter with the tag #DCLfilmclub.

In addition to the prize MANA and LAND, top submissions will be played at the DCL Film Club as part of Decentraland’s 1st Birthday Party on February 20th!

Happy filming, and we’ll see you in the metaverse!
